If You’re a Privacy-Freak, You Might Want To Turn This Instagram Feature Off
An Insta-update just rolled out a feature called “Show Activity Status” which reveals the last time you were active on Instagram. This is all well and good, except that the feature was only quietly launched, and—get this—is turned on by default. You can see how this is an issue to a lot of folks: not everyone wants to share their activity status, and by being turned on by default, you won’t know without prior knowledge that everyone you follow or everyone you messaged will know when you opened your app last. Yeesh.
Which is why we figured this article should come in handy. Here’s how you turn off your Instagram activity status:
- Go to your profile
- Tap the gear icon (if you’re on Android, tap the ellipsis, and skip Step #3)
- Scroll down to “Settings”
- Toggle off the “Show Activity Status” button
And you’re done. By doing this, you’ll be able to use the app with the peace of mind that no one will know when you use your app—indeed a nifty trick to be known especially for privacy-freaks like this author. One caveat worth mentioning is that by turning this feature off, you’re also expelling yourself from using the feature itself. Meaning, you won’t be able to know when your followers’ activity status.
While we’re on the subject of privacy, Instagram is testing out a new feature similar to Snapchat in which users will be notified of who screenshots their Stories. We’ll report on that update once it gets to everybody.
