The On-Screen Fingerprint Scanner: Vivo Just Beat Samsung To It
Vivo has unveiled at CES 2018 the first ever smartphone that ships with an in-display fingerprint sensor, beating the likes of Samsung and Apple to it. Here’s a clip from The Verge’s Vlad Savov who’d tried it firsthand:
The process is surprisingly familiar. You set it up the same way you would a capacitive fingerprint sensor as seen in Galaxys and previous iterations of the iPhone, and it reads and records almost as fast as the traditional sensor.
The new tech works well, but it must be noted that it works only on AMOLED displays, and not on LCDs, the reason being that authentication—which is developed in cooperation with Synaptics—is optical.
It’s been confirmed that OnePlus 6 will ship with the same under-screen fingerprint sensor; OnePlus, Vivo, and Oppo are under one corporation called BBK Electronics. Doogee has also confirmed that its newest flagship, the Doogee V, is going to ship with an on-screen scanner as well.
