Viber rolls out new chat extensions to enrich personal messaging
Viber wants to keep its place as one of the favored personal messaging platforms in the country. To that end, the Israeli-based company needs to show up with a handful tricks up its sleeve, seeing that the likes of Apple, Facebook, and other corporate giants are doubling down on messaging as well.
Via press release, Viber announces the debut of a handful of new Chat Extensions, including peppy-colored text bubbles called Viber Shouts, a bookmarking tool called Favorites, and a more robust and secure location-sharing feature.
To the uninitiated, Chat Extensions are something of a power-up, which enriches the experience of the app. There’s an extension, for instance, that allows you to share GIFs from within the app itself. You can share videos or songs through the YouTube and Spotify integration embedded in the app. There’s even a Booking.com extension that allows you to look up hotel and B&B accommodations.
Viber obviously sits nicely between the corporate and casual users, and as a small, creative group, we’re getting a kick out of using the app for team communication. We’ve yet to hit the point of requiring a more full-featured solution like Slack, but for now, Viber is more than plenty verse our needs.
“Viber is constantly striving to enrich the communication experience for the people who use it so passionately around the world,” says Viber CEO, Djamel Agaoua. “Introducing our three new and innovative Chat Extensions is consistent with our strategy to keep Viber as the powerful and expressive tool it is, offering exciting ways to chat in different styles and fashions. We are thrilled and confident these chat extensions, along with our ongoing commitment to simplicity and privacy, will continue to make the experience on Viber unique and exceptional for everyone.”
Circling back to the new features, they are:
Viber Shouts, which is the messaging equivalent of what Facebook is trying to do with their colorful status updates. Viber ports a version of this to their platform, which gives users another means for expression for when you need to carry a point across. Maybe a simple text isn’t enough? Maybe having a cyan-pomodoro gradient, for some reason, will help you say you’re thirsty for coffee better? The feature is there. Might as well use it.
Favorites is something of a bookmarking feature for all of the GIFs, links, and YouTube videos you’ve encountered anywhere in the chat. You can save any of the three by long-tapping the media, then hitting “save” into your Favorites.
Location is a new chat extension that makes it easier for users who wish to share their location with specific contacts. Naturally, this feature is only turned on to those who have location-sharing turned on.
Viber says it will be rolling out the aforementioned extensions soon globally. The extensions will be available on the Viber mobile apps on Android and iOS.
