Instagram Update: Video chat support, new explore page, and face filters
A new Instagram update is rolling out today, enabling support for video chat, a revamped explore page, and collectible face filters.
Instagram now has support for video chat among up to four people. This makes sense, seeing that cross-platform issues are prevalent in video chatting. For example, iOS users can’t FaceTime Android users; inversely, only those who have Google Duo can video call each other. Instagram, having at least a billion users as of press time, is in a uniquely ideal position to swoop in and possibly dominate the space.
To access the video chat function, simply go to your DMs, tap the name of your friend, and hit the video call button. You can call up to four people all at once. You can also minimize the call into a picture-on-picture frame so you can continue using the app while you’re on the call.
The new Explore page is also redesigned, which introduces Topics (e.g. Style, TV & Movies, Art, Travel, Decor, and more). Tap on a topic and you’ll be greeted with a curated list of hashtags and posts from the community.
Finally, the new face filters are here. Face filters aren’t new per se, but what’s interesting on this update is that these filters are collectible, meaning you can only obtain specific filters if you follow certain people. For example, you can only get the “Oh, Yes!” filter if you follow Tasty or the eyebrow-and-mustache filter if you follow Liza Koshy.
These features have rolled out with today’s update; you can try it out on the Instagram app.
